Back Pain
Back pain is common and affects most of us at some time in our life. In our office the majority of people are receiving care for a back pain. In some cases the pain comes on suddenly with little warning and in others the pain is persistent and recurs over a long period of time. The pain may come and go, it may move around or it may remain as a dull ache that gets worse in certain positions.
At Stillorgan Chiropractic you will get an expert assessment and a personalised report of the findings so that you can take an active role in your recovery. This includes a digital posture scan which will indicate pelvis and shoulder mis-alignment, muscle imbalance and compensation patterns
The majority of people with back pain are suffering from what is known as ‘simple’ or ‘mechanical’ back pain. This means that the pain is related to the structural elements not moving correctly. Joints, muscles, ligaments and discs may all be involved. Over time, these parts can tighten up, weaken or become unstable due to abnormal tension or stress.
Simple back pain can be caused by poor posture, prolonged sitting in an uncomfortable position, and even muscular tension due to emotional or work-related stress. Experiencing discomfort on the upper left side of the back could indicate various underlying causes, ranging from muscle strain to potential organ-related issues. Similarly, middle back pain may arise from poor posture, muscle imbalances, or spinal issues, highlighting the importance of proper ergonomics and regular exercise to maintain a healthy back.
Bad posture can lead to a range of detrimental effects on health, including back and neck pain, reduced lung capacity, and decreased circulation. To fix bad posture, incorporating exercises that strengthen core muscles, practicing ergonomic habits, and maintaining awareness of body alignment are essential. Common bad posture symptoms may manifest as rounded shoulders, forward head position, and discomfort after prolonged sitting or standing.
Less frequently, the nerves of the back can sometimes become irritated, compressed or trapped. Again, there can be many reasons why this happens, but slipped discs or wear and tear can lead to pain spreading down the leg, which is commonly referred to as sciatica. This can be accompanied by pins and needles, tingling, numbness and weakness in all or part of the leg and foot.
Regardless of the cause, the first step towards getting your life back on track comes from making an accurate diagnosis of your complaint. In our Dublin office we will provide an individualised care plan to suit your lifestyle and based on your health goals. This includes specific exercises and advice on supports such as pillows, insoles and ergonomics.
Taking the first step is the most difficult, but when you’re back doing the things you love, you will wonder why you waited!
Neck Pain
In our Dublin chiropractic office we see an increasing number of people who have neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches, which can often occur together. The pain can be severe and it is often difficult to turn the head in one or both directions. In many cases this comes on without warning (upon waking for example) and sometimes it builds up gradually over a period of days or weeks.
Worry or stress can cause tension in the neck and shoulders and can delay recovery of existing neck pain.
Having a proper assessment by an experienced chiropractor is important. A careful history and examination will instruct the chiropractor on how and where to make the correction or adjustment. Advice on how to manage the condition such as stretches or exercises as well as supports and pillows means that you can return to your work and doing the things you enjoy as soon as possible. Stillorgan Chiropractic provides chiropractic services in Dublin for almost 20 years so you can be sure you found the best help for your neck pain.
The majority of people with neck pain are suffering from what is known as ‘simple’ or ‘mechanical’ neck pain. This means the cause of the pain and restriction has something to do with the way the vertebrae are positioned and how they are moving. Although it can be very painful, neck pain rarely has a serious underlying cause.
Neck pain on the left side can stem from factors like muscle tension, pinched nerves, or improper sleeping positions. Experiencing neck pain during sleep often indicates the need for a supportive pillow and a comfortable sleeping posture to prevent strain and discomfort. Consulting a healthcare professional can provide tailored guidance to alleviate and prevent recurrent neck pain.
Sports Injuries & Performance
The nature of sport and improving skills is that certain movements are repeated so they get easier.
If it is basketball or darts, tennis or rugby, swimming or football the efforts we make will train our body and mind to make more efficient use of our energy, giving us the freedom to enjoy the activity.
Injuries occur when trauma results in damage to tissues. Recovery from injury is greatly improved with chiropractic. That’s because we focus on function – restoring proper motion. This means greater efficiency.
Our body keeps a record of our experiences. It is a story unfolding. These experiences may be old injuries that can hold us back and tighten our muscles, making us doubt ourselves, fearful of moving into unknown territory. We must navigate the outer reaches of what is safe if we are to glimpse into the unknown.
Prevention
This is simply taking action before an event occurs. It is preparation. If we want to reduce the likelihood of a crisis we must work on the problems as they arise. Like most athletes who have benefited from chiropractic, you may wish to get a ‘tune-up’ once in a while to keep injury at bay.
Andrew uses his training in sports science & exercise physiology along with his experience as a sportsman to helps athletes to recover from as well as prevent injuries.

Headaches & Migraines
Headache is a relatively common problem, affecting about one in five people in Ireland. In many cases those affected report having to take time off work as well as resorting to medication to treat the symptoms. Migraines are a special type of headache that is more severe and is accompanied by other symptoms in addition to head pain. At Stillorgan Chiropractic Services in Dublin we use a combination of techniques to treat both tension headaches and migraine headaches.
What’s the Difference Between Tension Headaches and Migraine Headaches?
Ordinary headaches can manifest as aching or pressure anywhere on the head, such as the back, side or around the eyes. Migraine headaches involve pain on one side of the head. The individual may also experience nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and vision problems. Many individuals report experiencing an “aura” or warning before a headache begins. Some also have depression, constipation, irritability or food cravings before a migraine.
Causes of Common Headaches
Individuals may develop a headache from long periods of close work that taxes the eyes. Loud sounds or bright lights can also cause a headache. Lack of sleep or blood sugar changes can lead to a headache.
Common headache causes encompass factors such as stress, dehydration, tension, and certain foods. For effective headache pain relief, practicing relaxation techniques, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter pain relievers under medical guidance can provide temporary relief. However, chronic or severe headaches should be assessed by a medical professional to identify any underlying conditions and determine appropriate management strategies.
Causes of Migraines
Genetics is thought to be a factor in migraine headaches. The environment may also play a part. Weather changes and changes in barometric pressure can also trigger migraine headaches. Hormonal fluctuations, medications, and food sensitivities are also linked to migraines.
